Still Life Hints

Pat's House: How do I bake cookies?

  • 1 of 25: The recipe book is on the counter.
  • 2 of 25: Although the book seems to be gibberish, it will be necessary to use the details of the recipe to bake the cookies.
  • 3 of 25: First, you will need to take the "ingredients" listed in the recipe and relate each item into a standard ingredient for gingerbread cookies, which can be found on the counter.
  • 4 of 25: Note that the recipe uses "cup" and "half cup" measures, but the measure on the counter are not in "cups", but are in "milliliters".  250 milliliters is equivalent to one cup; and 125 milliliters is equivalent to a half cup.  Also, if you rest the cursor on one of the ingredients, the name of the ingredient will be displayed.
  • 5 of 25: There are two parts to making cookies.  First, get the correct ingredients -- in the correct proportions -- into the mixing bowl.
  • 6 of 25: The second part is to mix the ingredients with the blender at the correct time.
  • 7 of 25: If you make a mistake, click on the garbage icon at the top left corner of the screen to dump out the bowl and start over.  When you think the cookies are ready, click on the oven at the top left corner of the screen to bake them.
  • 8 of 25: You may find it helpful to copy out the recipe, so that you have the information readily available without switching back and forth between the counter full of ingredients and the recipe book.
  • 9 of 25: Look over the recipe ingredients carefully for clues as to how to correlate each item in the recipe with an item on the counter.  For example, look at "1 common sense".  What could that be in terms of normal food ingredients?
  • 10 of 25: The common sense isn't measured -- it doesn't say 1 cup of common sense, or 1 tsp of common sense.  Look on the counter for something that wouldn't be measured.
  • 11 of 25: One common sense means one egg.  See how many other ingredients you can figure out, based on the instructions in the recipe book.
  • 12 of 25: Pay attention to what -- in the recipe -- needs to be creamed and what needs to be sifted.  Compare this to a traditional recipe for help in figuring it out.  In a traditional recipe, certain ingredients are often creamed together, while other ingredients are often sifted together.
  • 13 of 25: By following the same pattern in this recipe, we can guess that the "generosity, sweetness and love" most likely represent the milk, butter, and brown sugar (not necessarily in that order).  What else can you conclude about the ingredients, by comparing this to a traditional recipe?
  • 14 of 25: A normal recipe would have less butter than milk or brown sugar -- so this recipe must call for 1 cup milk (love), 1 cup sugar (sweetness), and 1/2 cup butter (generosity).
  • 15 of 25: As for the sifted ingredients, they would most likely be the dry ingredients.
  • 16 of 25: The flour, cinnamon, and ginger must be the sensuality, commitment, and romance -- now to figure out which is which.
  • 17 of 25: The recipe calls for 2 cups of commitment -- this must be the flour, since it wouldn't make sense to put that much spice in.
  • 18 of 25: As for the other two -- think about it -- what type of cookies are you trying to bake?
  • 19 of 25: You are baking gingerbread cookies...
  • 20 of 25: ...so, you will need to put in more ginger than cinnamon.  Therefore, the ginger must be the romance, and the cinnamon must be the sensuality.
  • 21 of 25: The only remaining item in the recipe is the integrity...
  • 22 of 25: ...and the only ingredient remaining is the molasses.
  • 23 of 25: Now that you've identified all the ingredients -- which gives you the needed proportions -- all that remains is putting it all together.  Remember to periodically mix the batter, as instructed in the recipe.
  • 24 of 25: The recipe says to cream together three ingredients, sift together three ingredients, then add the final two, and beat.  (Hmm, you only have one bowl...)
  • 25 of 25: Every time the recipe says to cream, sift, or beat -- that is your cue to use the blender (by clicking on the active spot to the right of the bowl).
