Using the lock picks

  • There are two lock picks, and they can be used interchangeably.  The shape of the head has nothing to do with solving the puzzle.

To use a pick on a tumbler, that tumbler must be accessible to be depressed fully by the lock pick.  The picks will always be inserted horizontally into the lock, and will be pressed vertically -- either up or down (depending on the target tumbler).  If any other tumbler is in the way, preventing the pick from moving completely to the top or bottom (i.e., depressing the target tumbler fully), nothing will happen.  Only the head of a pick can depress a tumbler -- not the shaft.

As a result, it is important to begin at the opening to the lock (the left side, where the picks start), and slowly open the tumblers one at a time, moving toward the back of the lock (the right side).  When all 15 tumblers have been fully depressed, and the lock is completely open, the puzzle is solved.

To change from one lock pick to the other, right-click the mouse button.  The active lock pick will be highlighted.  (If you are unsure of which is currently highlighted, right-click the mouse a couple of times, to watch the highlighting of the lock picks change.)

To depress a tumbler, select which pick you want to use (using the right mouse button), and then left-click on the target tumbler.  If the path to the tumbler is clear, and the tumbler can be depressed fully, the pick will force the tumbler to the open position.

To completely remove a pick, without placing it on any other tumbler, make sure that pick is the selected one, then left-click on the shaft of the pick.  It will retract.
