Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Hints
Any tips for beating Malak?
of 11: Yep, a few. First of all, I won't talk so much about how to beat him with, say, a Dark Side Guardian because it's really easy, as by this point you are probably dealing 50-70 damage a hit and never missing. Non-Guardians will have a somewhat tougher time, though. You're going to find this battle pretty tough if you are a Light Side Jedi, especially Consular, mostly because your most useful force power (Stasis Field) has no effect on Malak, ever. As a matter of fact, there are only a very select few force powers which can be used on Malak.
of 11: The force powers that affect Malak are: Force Wave, Force Storm, Death Field, Throw Lightsaber, and Force Breach, that's it.
of 11: Your best asset of those force powers is probably Force Wave, if you are a Light Side Jedi. It will keep Malak at bay, while you deal with more important things. If you are a Dark Side Jedi, Death Field will also be handy, as it will allow you to do a quick heal if you start getting injured. Breach is good mainly for getting rid of his Force Immunity.
of 11: The thing that makes this battle tough isn't really Malak, as you will discover, but the various captured Jedi around the room.
of 11: Every time Malak runs low on health, he will run over to one of the Jedi and drain their essence, completely healing himself. This, to put it lightly, is very annoying. Fortunately, it's possible to destroy the Jedi yourself -- as a matter of fact they will give you a boost if you do so.
of 11: To destroy them, you will need an offensive force power, such as Choke, Lightning, or Throw Lightsaber. If you don't have any, you are basically out of luck. If you do have them, however, ignore Malak after he first heals himself. Cast Force Speed, and run away. He won't pursue you that quickly, so you'll have some time to use your offensive power on the captured Jedi, destroying them.
of 11: Once they are all gone, deal with Malak as you would any Dark Jedi. Get some distance between you and him, and use all your buffing force powers and stim packs. Verpine Prototype Shields are also very handy in dealing with Malak, as they will absorb his damage easily. Be absolutely sure to keep your force powers active when you're fighting him. Force Immunity is especially important, as Malak will deal most of his damage to you with Force Storm and Death Field otherwise. If you don't have Immunity you're probably going to be running away and healing a lot.
of 11: When/if you start to get badly injured, use Force Speed if it's not already active, and retreat. Once you get far enough away Malak will stop chasing you, allowing you to use Force Heal or Medpacks as you will. Once you're all healed and your force gauge is full, recast your force powers and go at him again. Repeat as many times as it takes to bring him down.
of 11: Malak is probably the only enemy in the game who will cast Force Breach on you, so also be ready to retreat if he gets rid of your force powers.
of 11: If you have no offensive force powers to kill the captured Jedi with, you're in for a long, long fight. If you don't have Force Heal or at least 100+ Medpacks, you basically have no chance. As long as you have means to heal yourself continually, though, you should be able to keep fighting Malak by running away whenever you're being badly hurt, since he won't actually heal himself until he's low enough to use the captured Jedi.
of 11: Hopefully, you'll be able to beat him without too much trouble, and will be treated to one of the somewhat less than spectacular ending sequences. Oh well, you can't have everything.
