Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Hints

Character Creation

  • 1 of 6: When creating a character in KOTOR the first thing you should remember is that your character is going to become a jedi, and won't remain as your starting class for very long. Therefore it's important to choose stats that suit the jedi class you plan to be, rather than the initial class you choose. In other words, DON'T use the automatic stat distribution button.
  • 2 of 6: For people who want to play Light Side, I recommend starting as a Scoundrel (ironically), and becoming a Jedi Consular. Consulars are heavily reliant on force powers, so you will want to pump your wisdom and charisma up as much as possible, since they have a large effect on the strength and efficiency of your force powers. Starting as a Scoundrel will allow you to get a large damage bonus whenever you stasis/stun enemies due to your sneak attack. Since you'll be fairly weak in combat otherwise, this damage boost is a must.
  • 3 of 6: For people who want to play Dark Side, you should probably start out as a Soldier, and become a Jedi Guardian. Guardians are extremely powerful in combat, but don't rely very heavily on force powers. Since you'll be in melee combat a lot, be sure to pump up your strength.
  • 4 of 6: Since your jedi class is much more important than your initial class, you should NOT take any feats that are specifically for ranged weapons, as you will virtually always be using a lightsaber. Especially if you are doing a Scoundrel/Consular combo, you don't want to waste any of your feats.
  • 5 of 6: When you're actually playing the game, during the prologue planet Taris, try not to gain too many levels in your initial class, especially if you plan on becoming a Consular. You'll want to get as many force powers as possible, and to do that, you'll need to gain lots of levels in your jedi class. Since your maximum total level is 20, if you gain 9 levels in your initial class on Taris, you will be sorely lacking in force powers. As a Light Side character you will want to stop after 5 levels in Scoundrel. A Dark Side Guardian is a little easier since you are not so reliant on force powers; it's probably okay to gain 8 levels or so in soldier, since you'll gain a lot of feats.
  • 6 of 6: I don't really recommend using the Scout or Jedi Sentinel class. Both give a minimum of bonuses, very few feats, and a mediocre group of skills to choose from. Sometimes hybrid classes are good, but not here. The immunities you gain as a Sentinel are pretty much useless, since you gain essentially the same effect with one or two force powers put into force resistance, and the scout's implant ability is not nearly as useful as it may appear, since there aren't very many bonuses you can get from implants that you can't get from other items. It's a far better idea to specialize.
