Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Hints

Combat

  • 1 of 6: Combat in KOTOR is fairly straightforward. You click on the enemy you want to do something to, and select what you want to do to them, queuing up to four actions.
  • 2 of 6: It's a little more complicated to WIN combat without dying all the time, though.
  • 3 of 6: In general, you should always built your character up with combat feats, even if you're a Consular. All the other feats besides Jedi Defense and maybe Toughness, are useless compared to combat feats. The most important things to get (in my opinion) are Master Flurry for melee or Rapid Shot for ranged. The extra attack is really helpful, and when you have two lightsabers and Force Speed, it's quite impressive. Critical strike is also handy to have, mostly because it stuns opponents. I don't find it as useful as Flurry, though.
  • 4 of 6: If you are a Jedi Guardian, you'll find combat pretty easy. Especially if you pump up your strength and get some strength- and dexterity-enhancing items, you will tear through most enemies in the game. Dark Side Guardians are particularly good, due to their arsenal of offensive force powers to augment their extremely powerful lightsaber fighting ability.
  • 5 of 6: As other Jedi classes, though, you'll have to rely more on force powers than brute strength (though brute strength always helps). Early in the game, you won't need too many force powers in combat, though Knight and Master speed are always very nice to have active. Once you start fighting more Dark Jedi, and tougher enemies in general, you'll start needing to use your force powers more. Force Immunity is a must for when you start fighting force-using enemies, so try to keep it ready. If you are Light Side, Force Valor is incredibly useful, as it will make you much harder to affect with force powers, and will make you much more effective at using force powers and your lightsaber.
  • 6 of 6: Remember that it's always easiest to take down opponents if they can't fight back. Force powers such as Stasis, Choke, and Insanity are all extremely useful as they can debilitate enemies easily. When you are playing a class with less life (i.e., a Consular), powers such as Stasis or Insanity will be all that stands between you and a quick demise. If you started as a Scoundrel, debilitating your enemies will also let you use your sneak attack, giving you a large boost to damage. All Light Side Jedi should get Stasis Field as soon as possible for use in combat.
