Kate is a thrifty packer. When she moves from one location to another, she jettisons all unnecessary items. Whatever you have when you start in a new location is something you'll need later on in the game; everything useless will be gone.
So if your (inventory item) is no longer in your (inventory), it means you won't be needing (it) again.
