Tales of Monkey Island Hints
How do I hijack a ship?
of 12: Let's go talk to the guy on board the ship now. Maybe he's ready for a vacation.
of 12: Reginald Van Winslow, the current captain, says all you have to do to take over the ship is knock him off (the ship, that is). That should be easy; he looks like a fairly roly-poly guy. So all you have to do is get on board and --
of 12: -- and that's where the problem lies. Winslow has the ship well guarded. There are three ways to get on board; try all three.
of 12: The gang plank is coated with bacon grease, he dumps hot coals on your head when you try and climb the anchor chain, and if you shinny up the clothesline he just winches you back down.
of 12: The clothesline is the most promising avenue here; when Winslow is winching you down, he's winching his clothes back towards himself. You could make use of that if you could put something explosive in them first.
of 12: If you don't have anything explosive in your inventory, you'll have to come back to this problem when you do. Go work on the treasure-hunting puzzle for a while and come back when you have bombs.
of 12: Okay, now you've got bombs. (If you didn't run across them looking for buried treasure, go back into the jungle and go lower left, left, left to find them, a big pile of them.) And if you tried to get on board ship via the gangplank and then climb the anchor chain, you have a smoldering fire on the dock you can use to light said bombs. Goodie!
of 12: Light a bomb and place it in the pink panties on Van Winslow's clothesline. If Van Winslow was blind, deaf, and stupid, you could just winch the panties up to him and he'd blow up. But --
of 12: -- he's not blind and deaf, and he'll winch them right back down to you. You need to make him winch the line of his own accord.
of 12: So put the lighted bomb in the panties, then grab the line and shinny up it toward the ship as if you're trying to board the ship again.
of 12: Van Winslow will crank the line to send you back to the dock, and in the process will bring the bomb up to see him. Boom!
of 12: Now that he's capitulated, you can board the ship any time you want by climbing up the anchor chain.
