Tales of Monkey Island Hints
How do I stay in my body?
of 16: As you will have discovered, the locket transfer is only temporary. If you can figure out how not to get instantly whacked by the patrons of the bar --
of 16: -- you end up in an empty jail cell, where you can't do anything until the effects of the locket wear off in about 30 seconds. This is not helpful.
of 16: Re-inhabiting your body permanently is going to take a lot of backtracking. Now speaking as a living person, I'm just as glad it's not any easier for ghosts to reinhabit their dead corpses; but from Guybrush's point of view, it's rather tedious. So possess your soul in patience and let's get started.
of 16: First, you need some expert advice on this subject. Go to Swordfight, and you'll find someone who can give you some help here.
of 16: The Voodoo Lady said you need some spirit gum, which she was chewing when she was in jail on Flotsam. Did you notice all the gum on the sill of the right jail cell? That's the stuff.
of 16: Unfortunately, you always get thrown into the left cell, and the gum is on the right. You need to get someone else put into the left cell first --
of 16: -- and since the only eligible person is Bugeye, it'll have to be him. You need to make him mad so you'll start a fight in the bar, and since he always wins the fights where you're a zombie, you'll have to do it as a ghost.
of 16: Go into the Swordfight rip and talk to Bugeye. He doesn't seem to want to talk about how he got out of the manatee; maybe that's a place to start.
of 16: Once Bugeye is incarcerated, go back into the Gateway rip, use the locket, enter your body, and surrender. Now that you're in the correct cell, grab the gum --
of 16: -- and scream, because nothing happens. There are so many different wads of gum here, and there's no way to tell which one is the spirit gum. So how do we find out which wad is the right one?
of 16: The Voodoo Lady said the spirit gum has some ghostly properties. She also said root beer "affects spiritual manifestations in the physical world." Maybe a little root beer would loosen that gum up. In order to find out, you need to find a way to give your physical body a mug full of root beer.
of 16: Use the locket again to go back into your body and surrender to get back in the right cell. Take the mug from the window ledge and then fade away back into the spirit world.
of 16: Go back into the Swordfight rip, and sure enough, your body is now holding a mug. Now we just need to fill it with the right stuff.
of 16: W.P. won't serve you, but if you say "Boo!" to him while he's throwing darts --
of 16: -- one will go astray and pierce the keg over Guybrush's head, thus filling the mug. Perfect.
of 16: Okay, one last trip. Go into the Gateway rip, use the locket, enter your body, surrender, and get into the right cell. Use root beer on the chewed gum on the window sill, and phew! you're done!
