Can I play this game without playing the earlier games?
Yes, certainly; the game has plenty of information to fill you in on the parts of Tex's history you need to know to play the game. You may miss some of the jokes, but not too many.
The greater hazard is that you'll desperately wish you *could* go back and play the old games. Good luck! They're still out there, but it's pretty hard to get them to play on current systems; they were published to use Windows 95 and require massive manipulation to run under any other system. If you want to try anyway, you can find them on Steam and GoG, or could at this writing. If you're new to games of this era, I'd skip the first two (Mean Streets and Martian Memorandum) and start with Under a Killing Moon, which is still in my opinion one of the very best computer games of all time.
