Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure Hints
I got kind of lost. Can you summarize the plot?
Well ... only in very broad terms, I'm afraid. Let's see.
-- Nikola Tesla invented a device that tapped into the resonant frequency of large structures like buildings. Its core was a large copper egg known as the Tesla Egg, or the Egg of Columbus.
-- This device is sometimes blamed for the Tunguska Event, in which a huge area in Russia suddenly exploded for no known reason.
-- When Tesla died in 1943, his work was all confiscated by the FBI and locked away.
That much is all true in the real world. In Tex's world --
-- Tesla hired a shady detective named J.T. Donnelly to do his dirty work for him. Donnelly lived in an apartment in the Ritz on Chandler Street in San Francisco.
-- At some point, Donnelly got his hands on the Tesla Egg and hid it in the wall of his apartment. When he died, he appears to have been cryogenically preserved by the Tesla Legacy Society (TLS).
-- In 2012, an FBI agent named Charles Johansson stole the Tesla papers (known as the Tesla cache) and brought it, or parts of it, to the TLS.
-- While at the TLS, Charles met and married Margaret Leonard, and they had a baby named Chelsee. Before she was born, however, Charles died.
-- Like many members of the TLS, Charles allowed his body to be cryogenically preserved. Margaret gave Chelsee to a mutant couple, the Bands, to raise, and she set about trying to contact Charles using the Tesla Egg and another Tesla device known as the Spirit Radio.
-- In the 2030s, Tex moved into the Ritz on Chandler in the apartment that used to be Donnelly's.
-- Margaret was funded by Gideon Enterprises, an organization that is both innovative and unethical. Dalton Fiske, a manager there, found out about the Tesla cache and tried to force Margaret to revive Charles. She resisted, having seen the sort of physical and mental degeneration suffered by those so revived (known as morlocks), so she took the egg and bolted.
-- In 2043, Fiske kidnapped Chelsee and Tex to try to force Margaret out of hiding. When this didn't work, he planted Chelsee's DNA in Tex's speeder, set it on fire, and let her and Tex go.
-- Chelsee then disappeared. Margaret sent her friend Thompson Ault off to protect her, and he eventually married her, though their relationship seems to have been platonic, a matter of friendship rather than love (at least on her side).
-- What happened to Tex for the next seven years is uncertain. He seems to have channeled dreams from Donnelly via the Egg, and perhaps this was the reason for his violent personality shift. He became a brutal treacherous amoral jerk, and also extremely wealthy.
-- Meanwhile, Fiske managed to convince the TLS to revive Charles, who emerged with the delusion that he had been in contact with Tesla and could use the Egg and the Spirit Radio to bring about a union of heaven and earth. The TLS refused to help, since their analysis of the situation was that this combination would instead merely destroy the earth.
-- With the help of Gideon Enterprise's money and a vicious killer named Slade, Charles (who now called himself the Translator) destroyed the TLS and took the pieces of the cache he wanted.
-- Knowing what Charles had become, Margaret joined with Ault, Maldonado, Tex, and a neurologist named Mason Bauers to find the Egg before Charles could get it.
As the game opens --
-- Tex has the Egg and is about to sell it to Charles, along with the whereabouts of Margaret, Bauers, and Chelsee. He knows what this will do and feels a little sick, but the money is more important to him.
-- Margaret knows his character. When he arrives, she and Mantus, a morlock friend, grab Tex and inject him with a serum that destroys his memory of the last seven years (a technology developed by Ault) so he can't reveal her whereabouts. She gives the Egg to Mantus.
-- Ault arrives and tries to force Margaret to give him the Egg; she has a heart attack and dies just as Slade and his henchmen arrive.
-- Ault distracts Slade and company while Maldonado removes Margaret's head and puts it in a cryo chamber, with the intention of using Ault's expertise to extract her memories from it. At some point, Maldonado takes a fatal injury, but manages to get himself and the cryo chamber into his secret room before he dies.
-- Ault is taken by Slade, but before he does he manages to erase his own memory to keep Charles from learning what he knows.
And that's where the game starts. Does that help at all?
