The Elder Scrolls III: Tribunal Hints
The Matchmaker
of 11: You'll find several people who will first put this quest in your journal, but the best place to start is probably Marena Gilnith, who's on the stage side of the Great Bazaar. She'll tell you that she wants to "meet someone new" and eventually asks you to track down a suitable match for her.
of 11: Just keep your eyes open, and you'll find as many as three possible matches. Read ahead to learn where they are.
of 11: Fons Beren, who's nearby in the Bazaar, will be looking for a "saucy wench". Sunel Hlas, behind the counter in the Trader's shop, will talk to you about "women" and "foolishness". Or talk to Goval Ralen in the Temple Courtyard, to the southwest of the Temple, about "women".
of 11: There's really two parts to this quest -- deciding for yourself whom the best match for Marena is, and then if necessary, giving that person advice for their first date. You may want to save your game, since you only have one shot at getting this right, although common sense will at least give you some idea of how to handle this.
of 11: Once you've met each of the men and talked to them about women in general, you'll then be able to go back to Marena, mention "meet someone new" and name the man you'd like her to date. She'll send you to the man to tell him to meet her in a few days at the Winged Guar.
of 11: Then, go to the man and pick the "Marena Gilnith" topic to set up the date. Here's the trick -- you must mention it *twice* in a row without ending the conversation. That will give you a chance to give the man some advice, but if you say "goodbye" and then try to come back even a minute later, he'll be preparing for his date and refuse to talk to you at all any more.
of 11: When you're done, try waiting a few days, and then meet Marena back where she was and her date back where he was to see how the date ended and to claim your reward if any.
of 11: Goval is probably the easiest of the dates. You don't need to give him any advice, but if you do, you can tell him to stop being so starry-eyed and offer him a bit of cash for better clothes. Either way, you should get a reward of the Ralen Family Belt, which adds a constant 5 points to speechcraft and personality.
of 11: Fons Beren is a bit trickier. If you tell him "Try really listening" as your advice, the date will go well, but there's no reward in it for you either way.
of 11: Sunel Hlas is the best date. You'll need to tell him "Don't act so depressed. Try and be optimistic," if you want the date to go well. When it's over, he'll be back in his shop, but she'll be upstairs instead of back outside. You can get the BiPolar Blade (a long blade artifact) from him as your reward.
of 11: NOTE: Even if you do everything right, there's still only about a 75% chance that the date will go well, so you'll want to save before it starts and not do much else until it's over. That way you can restore and try it again without losing too much progress if it fails.
