The Elder Scrolls III: Tribunal Hints
Where can I find the mercenary that the game manual mentions?
1 of 7: There's one mercenary in Mournhold.
2 of 7: His name is Calvus Horatius, and he starts out in the Royal Palace's Courtyard area.
3 of 7: Talk to him about being available for hire. He's yours for 30 days if you pay him $250 and never let his profit margin drop below $0 (use the Share option to see his current profit). Note that a profit of $0 means he's carrying exactly $750 worth of stuff (including gold) the first time you hire him. The break-even number may stay at $750 when you hire him a second time, or it may go up to match whatever profit he made the last time -- different patch levels may cause players to see different things. It's probably best to save and test things out before you try to take too much away from the mercenary if you hire him multiple times.
4 of 7: It can be fun to "dress him up" with all the artifacts and other goodies you've found that you don't particularly want to use yourself. It's also a good idea to give him lots of healing potions if you plan to take him into any serious battles.
5 of 7: You can see him wear the major armor and weapon items you give him. You can't see what rings and amulets he has on, though, so you'll have to trust the computer's judgment as to what he will use if you give him more than that -- or else just limit him to 2 rings and 1 amulet at a time if you want to be sure.
6 of 7: Fortunately, you can drop him off at any place and time by talking to him about "change the plan." Use the same dialogue option to pick him back up again later on.
7 of 7: To see how many days remain on your current contract, talk to him about "contract." If he's happy when the contract expires (i.e., if his profit is $0 or more), he'll let you hire him on for another 30 days.
