Uplink Hints

Passive tracking

  • 1 of 11: When you disconnect, a passive trace begins. Passive tracking means they're tracing you through the logs in the servers you bounced through.
  • 2 of 11: Passive tracking can be overcome only by clearing the logs in one or more of the systems you passed through.
  • 3 of 11: One will do, but more won't hurt. Remember that getting caught in any government (or mainframe) frauds end your game straight away.
  • 4 of 11: There are several low security servers that are perfect for log-deleting. Find a system that changes its password very few times (or not at all) and keep using that -- you won't get caught if you play your hand right.
  • 5 of 11: There are a few to be found already at the beginning of the game.
  • 6 of 11: You've actually hacked there, too.
  • 7 of 11: The Uplink Test Machine is perfect for bouncing -- stick it in the first few bounces and then delete the logs there. No danger involved (but remember to bounce when you connect there, too). See the 'Grabbing the Console' section on how to clear them easily in the early game.
  • 8 of 11: There's also another one that offers even more safety and ease.
  • 9 of 11: It's a government-run operation, free for all.
  • 10 of 11: Free for all indeed, as the password never changes and there's no monitor -- AND you have a perfectly good reason to visit that place.
  • 11 of 11: The system in question is the InterNIC. Crack the password once and you'll be set for life (or so to speak). You'll need a Log Deleter v4.0, though, as you can't access the console.
