Uplink Hints

Self-protective systems

  • 1 of 7: This is not an actual security system per se, but due to the structure and integrity of the operating system it offers some protection against destruction attempts.
  • 2 of 7: Any and every computer system has in-built protection. This protection keeps the system's system records safe in case they are accidentally (or purposefully) deleted. If the system is allowed to keep running even for a short period of time while its system records are gone, they will be revived due to back-ups the system keeps within its operating memory.
  • 3 of 7: Also the self-protective system prevents unauthorised people from running programs and/or deleting files. If they've tracked you to a few servers away, you won't be able to do either of these things.
  • 4 of 7: Thus, any attempts to shut down systems permanently will fail if the system is granted time with which to restore its system files.
  • 5 of 7: There is a simple and efficient solution to this.
  • 6 of 7: Take advantage of the time required for the system to revive its system files.
  • 7 of 7: Simply shut the system down immediately after the system files are deleted.
