Uplink Hints

Whuzzat Again? -- A few things to remember

  • 1 of 15: Press Escape to quickly clear a text field.
  • 2 of 15: Press 'F12' to quickly leave the game (and save it safe and sound).
  • 3 of 15: You only have to hold the cursor over a text field to select it. You can type away without clicking on it.
  • 4 of 15: _Always_ clear your logs. Use the InterNIC and/or the Uplink Test Machine for foolproof protection.
  • 5 of 15: Learn to use the console. This is very handy when clearing logs in the early game, and you'll find many other uses for it in the endgame. Note that you cannot access the console in the government databases or the InterNIC. (nor in some other systems)
  • 6 of 15: Remember that you can click on Finances and then on your account to directly (and quickly) connect to your account.
  • 7 of 15: You should only get what software you specifically need for any given mission type. Don't buy software "just in case", you'll need every credit you can muster for some of the useful soft/hardware.
  • 8 of 15: After you buy the HUD_MapShowTrace, you may want to consider letting the Trace Tracker go, as you'll see straight away how far the trace has proceeded. (and the TT takes valuable processor time you'll be needing in the future)
  • 9 of 15: Always have a Motion Sensor application running.
  • 10 of 15: If a system has a Proxy and a Firewall, you won't necessarily need to pass both. Simply bypass the proxy server and then turn off the security. You cannot turn the security off in banks, government databases or mainframes.
  • 11 of 15: Don't waste your money buying any CPU less than 200Ghz. Ever.
  • 12 of 15: Don't bother with v1.0:s on any software type, always get the best version you can afford. If you don't have enough money for a v5.0, increase your loan, accept a few more missions (and get the money in advance!) or do SOMETHING to get the money. Buying lesser versions is just a waste of money and space.
  • 13 of 15: Here's a good way to progress on the Proxy/Firewall software line:
    Proxy_Disabler v5.0(10k), Firewall_Bypass v5.0(10k), Monitor_Bypass v5.0(25k)
    and last (but not least) Proxy_Bypass v5.0(20k).
  • 14 of 15: If you do bother with lesser versions of any software, remember to delete the old versions when you update.
  • 15 of 15: Remember to fill your gateway with the best possible toys. Don't leave empty memory/CPU slots. Also, check every once in a while that you have the best modem you can fit in your GW.
