Uplink Hints

Introduction -- What, exactly, is Uplink? (Unofficial)

  • Uplink is a high-tech espionage game situated in the year 2010. Computers have evolved to the point where true artificial life itself can be researched. Hard drives have been moved to museums since memory chips have evolved as well thus making physical data storage obsolete.

The international power struggles have ended, as a single unnamed government rules everywhere. Massive corporations now control the net and data transfer, and accordingly small groups have emerged who make use of the situation. This is the era of hackers.

Due to constant pressure from the government and the fact that modern data protection has evolved alongside the hardware, single hackers have nearly vanished from the face of the earth. Working alone brings isolation, paranoia and a constant fear of getting caught. Even though they know their business, most hackers who work alone die from suicide.

In the light of such things the Uplink Agency was founded. Gathering hackers from all around the world, they offer a safe haven for hackers to practice their skills. In the confines of Uplink's structures there lies dozens of Gateways. The Gateway is simply a single computer system to which a hacker connects to (they are individual), and which actually does the hacking, thus eliminating the chance of personal capture. They might get your Gateway, but they can't get you.

To the outside world, the Uplink Corporation appears only to offer its members a way to remotely and anonymously access their data from anywhere in the world. Naturally, the Uplink Corporation also rents Gateways to other needs than hacking, but these users are rarely aware of the activities and skill in play within the other computers.

You are the newest member-to-be of the Uplink Agency. As you start the connection program (labelled, unsurprisingly, Uplink), your computer will connect to the Uplink Public Access Server. There you may create yourself an Agent handle (a nick name under which you will work through your career), and join the Agency. You will gain 3,000 credits -- a loan that you must repay, your first Uplink Gateway -- it may not be much, but it's yours -- and some software to get you started. Good luck, Agent! And remember the first rule of hacking:

    "Don't get caught."
