Uplink Hints

Mainframe hacking

  • 1 of 11: Mainframes have a rather high security. Or so they like to think.
  • 2 of 11: You have to get through three layers of security.
  • 3 of 11: First layer: you have to _get_ to the system.
  • 4 of 11: Rejection in itself brings enlightenment.
  • 5 of 11: Read the rejection text to find out how to get past.
  • 6 of 11: The last server you bounce through must be owned by the same corporation.
  • 7 of 11: Second layer: All Mainframes need Voice Identification to let you in. (The Government, ARC and the Arunmor Mainframes have Elliptic Curve protection, as well. Cracking the password shouldn't pose a problem.)
  • 8 of 11: See the Voice IDand Elliptic Curve sections for details on those systems.
  • 9 of 11: Hack the second layer in this order: Voice check (Elliptic Curve) -- Password. This is because the instant you click on 'Proceed' after hacking an admin's password, the active trace will start, no matter your protection.
  • 10 of 11: Now we come to the third layer. This consists of the system's Proxy or Firewall servers and self-protection. See Security systems for more details.
  • 11 of 11: Mainframes have usually low-level proxies and firewalls. Levels 1 and 2 are the most usual. ARC and Arunmor are rather large exceptions, though. (Note: The servers might gradually up their security if they're attacked constantly.)
