Uru: The Path of the Shell Hints

I've finished Ahnonay, but I still don't understand the logic behind it!

  • 1 of 10: WARNING: SPOILERS!  Only read this if you've already finished Ahnonay by getting to Kadish's Room.  Herein is explained exactly how Ahnonay works and how your actions throughout the Age have managed to allow you to progress.
  • 2 of 10: Now that you've finished Ahnonay, you've seen the true nature of the Age.  If you haven't, pull the lever in Kadish's room to open the windows and see the Age you've been "time travelling" through.
  • 3 of 10: Ahnonay's four different versions are actually four different islands, each situated inside a sphere.  Each of the four spheres is positioned at the end of a rotating "+" shaped mechanism.  By linking out through the Linking Book on the pedestals of each version, leaving no living things behind on the island, you prompted the mechanism to rotate 90 degrees, moving another version of the island into the active position.
  • 4 of 10: Keep in mind that when you link in to an Age, you don't link to a specific place in the Age, but to specific coordinates.  When you first linked to Ahnonay, First Ahnonay was in the active position, meaning that the coordinates that the Book in the Linking Chamber linked you to were contained within the sphere of First Ahnonay at the time.  When you cleared out the Quabs and linked out via the book on the pedestal, however, the entire mechanism rotated, placing Second Ahnonay where First Ahnonay used to be.  As a result, Second Ahnonay now contained the link-in coordinates.
  • 5 of 10: The mechanical tunnel you swam to was actually the "arm" that connects each sphere to the central mechanism.  This is why each version of the island had a unique mechanical tunnel.
  • 6 of 10: Notice, however, that you didn't go to Fourth Ahnonay through the normal linking process.  This is because Fourth Ahnonay is incomplete.  Kadish didn't want anyone to link to Fourth Ahnonay before it was done, so he programmed his mechanism to skip Fourth Ahnonay.  In other words, when you linked out of Third Ahnonay via the pedestal book, the mechanism rotated 180 degrees, skipping Fourth Ahnonay, to get back to First Ahnonay.
  • 7 of 10: So how did you trick the system in order to get to Fourth Ahnonay?
  • 8 of 10: In First Ahnonay, you pulled the lever in the tower, causing the mechanism to rotate.  Second Ahnonay was in the active position, although you were still in First Ahnonay.  Then you swam to the mechanical tunnel and touched the Shell Cloth while First Ahnonay was in an inactive position.  You now had link-in coordinates that were in an inactive position.  Finally, you pulled the lever next to the large door, which rotated Ahnonay's mechanism once again.  This moved Third Ahnonay into the active position, but, more importantly, it moved First Ahnonay out of the position where you touched the Shell Cloth and moved Fourth Ahnonay into that position.  Now, the coordinates that the Shell Cloth occupied when you touched it were within the sphere of Fourth Ahnonay.
  • 9 of 10: As a result, when you used the Shell Cloth to link back into Ahnonay, you linked into the Fourth Ahnonay sphere.
  • 10 of 10: From the room behind Fourth Ahnonay's mechanical tunnel, you found the chair vehicle.  This took you out from the depths of the rotating mechanism to Kadish's personal observation room.  With that, the mystery of Ahnonay is solved.
