Uru: Ages Beyond Myst Hints

How do I use the three devices at the start of this age?

  • 1 of 15: Each of the devices is more like a pair -- there's a viewscope, and it's looking at a display in the distance with several ring shapes on it.  (Or at least pieces that are mainly curved in concentric circles -- I'll just call them "rings" anyway.)
  • 2 of 15: The viewer also has a set of rings on it, so what you are seeing is really a combination of several sets of rings -- the ones in the viewer overlap the ones in the distance.
  • 3 of 15: Each of the viewers also has three buttons, which move the rings in the distance.
  • 4 of 15: The button on the left will move all three of the rings in the distance, the middle button moves only two of those, and the right button moves only one of those two.
  • 5 of 15: And remember that the rings on the viewer don't move -- so some shapes will always overlap the ones that you can move.
  • 6 of 15: You're trying to make a specific pattern in each of the viewers.
  • 7 of 15: To figure out which of the three possible patterns goes in each viewer, it helps if you can compare the fixed pieces of each puzzle to the lines on the stained-glass pieces.
  • 8 of 15: Just keep pressing the leftmost button on the viewer, and you will see what rotates and what doesn't.  You will find that only one of the stained-glass pieces can possibly be matched to each of the viewers.
  • 9 of 15: It particularly helps to look for the long straight lines, both in the stained-glass pieces and on the viewers.
  • 10 of 15: Remember that the left button is the only one that controls all three rings -- so there's also one ring that it, and only it, will move.  Try to focus only on that one ring (not the other two that can be moved with the other two buttons as well) and line up that ring with part of the solution from the gallery.
  • 11 of 15: Then proceed to the middle button to get one of the other shapes in place -- ignoring the shape that the right button also controls -- and finally use the right button to line up the last shape.
  • 12 of 15: Also remember that rings may overlap, both with the fixed rings, and with the other two rings you can move at the viewer.  Again, focusing on the straight lines and not on the curved parts may help you, as these tend to overlap less with each other.
  • 13 of 15: If you need the full answer, read the following questions.
  • 14 of 15: After you have set all of the devices correctly, you should notice something change.
  • 15 of 15: A door that is visible through the third viewer (the one on the far right of this area, in an open section) should now open.  Walk through it.
