Uru: Ages Beyond Myst Hints
How do I save my game?
Unlike the previous three Myst games, or most other adventure games, for that matter, Uru does not allow you to save your game -- at least not in the usual sense. Whenever you exit the game, the state of the world -- all the puzzles that you've solved, all of the Journey Cloths you've found, even the location of pebbles on the ground -- is saved automatically. Everything, except where your avatar is in the game.
When you start the game the next time, this "save" is automatically loaded again, so you don't lose any progress toward solving puzzles. However, your avatar does start out in a predetermined location -- either the start of the desert or your Relto age, depending on how far along you are in the game -- and you may need to backtrack a bit to get to the same location that you were when you exited the game.
You can use the linking books to help speed up your journey -- don't forget that the cloth shown in each linking book returns you to the last Journey Cloth that you touched -- but some walking around may still be needed. (Why the game can save everything except for your location is beyond me. It must have something to do with Uru Live.) If you're able to help it, try to quit just after touching a Journey Cloth, to reduce the need to retrace your steps. You can also use ALT+TAB to switch out of the game temporarily to another Windows program without quitting, or at least I was able to on my system. When you ALT+TAB back, the game should be exactly where you left it.
There is no way to save manually, so you can't keep multiple saves as a way of "bookmarking" your progress and returning to a specific point in your adventures. You can reset an entire age by clicking on the tab at the bottom of its linking book, but you can't just reset a single puzzle, or anything like that. I don't believe it's possible to get "stuck" completely in an age, though -- you can always Relto back if you don't know where to go. (Although you may need the latest patch -- the first version of the game seems to have had one or two bugs that do allow you to get stuck, if I read correctly what the patch is supposed to fix.)
