Voyage Hints

Using the Inventory

  • The inventory in Voyage will be used extensively.  The inventory can be called up by clicking the right mouse button.  Items can be stored in the inventory on a series of "tabbed pages", where each page contains a grid of 18 slots to hold inventory items.  You can move from page to page in the inventory by clicking on the tabs at the top of the grid.

Items that you pick up will not go directly into the inventory, but into a "holding area" in the upper right corner of the inventory screen.  You can select them from there, and place them anywhere in your inventory.  Or you can simply let the game place them on the currently open page, by clicking the "Auto" button at the top of that area.

One suggestion is to use the multiple pages to group similar items: e.g., tools on one tab, food on another, chemical compounds on a third, etc.  That way, it will be easier to navigate through your inventory, and find things more quickly, after it begins to fill up.  (And it will!)

Note that if all 18 spaces on the current inventory tab are full, and you have an item in hand, you will not be able to put it down again.  You will need to find a place in the inventory to add it.  The easiest way is to select another tab (i.e., go to another page of the inventory) where there is room, and place the item there.

There are also a couple of other things that are accessible from the inventory screen, which are helpful for playing the game.  There are three buttons in the upper left corner of the inventory.  The first ("Menu") duplicates the function of pressing the Esc key, bringing up the game menu, which allows Saving games, Loading previously-saved games, configuring game Options, and even reviewing some of the key Pictures that represent what has gone on in the game so far.

The second ("Log") brings up a log that is being kept by Michel Ardan, where he makes notes of some of the key discoveries he has made, some notes on documents he has found, or conversations he has had with other characters.  Refer to this frequently as you progress through the game, for hints as to what you might do.

The third button ("Puttering about") will show the various combinations of things that Ardan has already attempted to make, if any.  (It can serve as a good reminder of how certain "creations" came about, for later reference.)

The fourth button ("Ideograms") will show a journal of all of the known ideograms that have been encountered in the game.  It is critical to find, and decipher, all of these ideograms, as Ardan progresses through the game.  Each time one is deciphered (typically accompanied by a comment from Ardan), it will be added to this journal.

The last button ("Investigation") refers to the storyboard that was created at the start of the game.  This will come much more into play later in the game, as Ardan closes in on his goal of returning to Earth.
