Voyage Hints
The retrorockets were insufficient to slow the rocket, and Ardan crashed!
of 13: It seems that the weight of the projectile was too great for the retrorockets to provide sufficient thrust to slow it down.
of 13: Somehow, the weight of the projectile will need to be lowered enough so that the descent speed will be decreased sufficiently by the retrorockets so as to accomplish a safe landing.
of 13: How might Ardan reduce the weight of the projectile?
of 13: There's really no other way than to throw out unnecessary items.
of 13: This is somewhat intuitive... and somewhat non-intuitive. Think first about weight/mass...
of 13: The two largest items that can be tossed into space are the bodies of Ardan's two companions.
of 13: Start by throwing out Barbicane and Nicholls, if you haven't already done so.
of 13: There are some items that won't make much difference in weight, so they are not as useful to dispose of.
of 13: And there are other items that Ardan will refuse to toss, because they "might cone in useful later".
of 13: There is really very little that can be disposed of, that will not be needed later.
of 13: In fact, only two other items (besides the two bodies) are necessary to reduce the weight sufficiently for the retrorockets to accomplish their task.
of 13: One is the wrench. (It must be a really heavy wrench!)
