How can I do this in only two weighings?

  • 1 of 6: Begin by putting any 3 isotopes in the left pan, and any other 3 isotopes in the right pan.
  • 2 of 6: Press the button.  If the two pans are equal, all six will be marked with a red check mark.  If they are not equal, the three that are on the heavier pan -- along with the three still at the top of the page -- will be marked with a red check mark, since the lightest isotope must be in the group of three that were on the lighter pan.
  • 3 of 6: When all isotopes have been moved back to the top of the screen, find the 3 isotopes that are still unmarked.
  • 4 of 6: Move any one to the left pan, and any one to the right pan.
  • 5 of 6: Press the button.  The lightest isotope will be identified automatically.  If the two pans were equal in weight, the lightest isotope must be the ninth one -- the one still unweighed.  If the two pans were not equal in weight, the lightest of the nine isotopes would be the lighter of the two in this second weighing.
  • 6 of 6: After these two weighings, the lightest isotope will be identified with a green check mark, and taken into inventory.
