Voyage Hints
So what is it I'm supposed to do here?
of 21: Choose one of the pairs of lights on the chart. (For the sake of example, this hint will use the "blue-red" pair.)
of 21: On the organ, press the two colored keys that match the two chosen lights. (The organ keys can be pressed in either order: blue-red, or red-blue.)
of 21: Two tones are produced by the organ. What happens next?
of 21: In the distance, you can hear the same two tones produced, followed by two other tones.
of 21: (Note that the first two tones that come back may, or may not, be in the same order as the two tones you generated. It will just depend on which order you used. What IS critical is the order OF THE RESPONDING TONES, not your original order.)
of 21: If you do nothing for a moment, what happens?
of 21: You will hear either a "intimidating sound" or an "irritated sound".
of 21: Look again at the chart. Where is the blue-red light pair?
of 21: Be sure that it is at the very top of the chart. (If it isn't, wait a moment, and -- after you hear a tone from the distant alien -- it will be.)
of 21: Now try again -- press the blue and red keys. But this time, as soon as you have control of the mouse again, turn quickly and look at the chart.
of 21: What do you see?
of 21: The blue-red light pair should have moved down one position -- toward the center of the chart.
of 21: By producing the first two tones of one of the aliens' "calls", you have caused them to move closer to you (represented by the center of the diagram).
of 21: But that is only one step in the process. You'll need to continue to move it closer, until you bring it "in from the field".
of 21: Go back to what you heard in response to your first two tones.
of 21: The alien echoed your two notes (perhaps in reverse order), then added two more.
of 21: Your task now is to reproduce all four of those tones -- IN THE ORDER THEY WERE MADE BY THE ALIEN -- on the organ. In effect, it's a game of "Simon".
of 21: Each time you correctly reproduce the alien's response, the pair of lights representing that alien comes one step closer to the center of the diagram -- and its echo gets louder at each position.
of 21: If you incorrectly reproduce the sound pattern -- or take too long to respond -- the alien will produce one of several tones of animosity, and return all the way to its starting position.
of 21: Thus, you will need to correctly reproduce the tones six times -- as the alien gets nearer and nearer, and its responses get louder and louder (and longer and longer) -- to bring the alien to where you currently are.
of 21: You will need to do this for all three of the aliens indicated by the light pairs. Once that is done, you can return to Scurvy, and proceed with moving your shell.
