What's with the broken toasters?
1 of 4: Don't drop them. They'll come in useful later.
2 of 4: Do your characters have an IQ of 20 yet?
3 of 4: If so, have you been to a library?
4 of 4: There's a skill called "toaster repair". Later on, you find a workbench for repairing toasters (bizarre, I know). You can use the toaster on the workbench, then use "toaster repair" on the bench + toaster. Each toaster contains various items (power packs, keys, etc.)
