Troll Berserker
A Troll Berserker is really just an upgraded Axethrower, but a Berserker is much better. Once you invest the money to upgrade to berserkers, in addition to 10 extra hit points, you will have 3 upgrade options: sight=9; range=+1; and troll regeneration. If you are playing with fog of war OFF, then it is not really worth investing the money to upgrade the sight. An upgraded range can help in a defensive line, because the Berserkers can attack the enemies from further out. You can enable troll regeneration for 3000 gold, which is a fairly good deal. If you decide to get troll regeneration, about every 10 seconds your Berserker will gain 1 hit point until he is maxed out. But only spend this money to upgrade if you use Axethrowers as your defenders. They seem to get killed to quickly when attacking, so regenerating life unless they get a long break inbetween can be useless. Altogether, if you don't use many Trolls in your attack force, don't bother upgrading.
