Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness Hints
Spellcasting
Now, depending on what kind of level you are playing, you may want to research different spells. For instance, for Ogre-Mages, it's usually good to research everything you can. For Paladins, research Healing, and Exorcism is you fell that skeletons or Death Knights are overwhelming you. For Mages, I like researching all spells but Slow. For Death Knights, I sometimes do Raise Dead (if I need surplus guys), never do Haste, and rarely Unholy Armor.
Paladins don't have attack spells. Therefore, they will heal other guys and cast Invisibilty on them. The computer will ALWAYS have their Paladins cast Healing on their units in the heat of battle, but it's very difficult to do this in the actual game. This brings upon a good method: memorize the hot key for each spell. For a Paladin, instead of going over to the sidebar, clicking on "Healing" and click on the guy you want to heal, just press H and click on the guy you want rejuvenated. You should also use his method in exorcising Death Knights (which you should do the minute you see them!) This also works well for the Ogre-Mage and the Bloodlust spell.
With Death Knights, never get close to the enemy. Although they look powerful, they are weak. The Death Coil spell is great for attacking any enemy guys, and it's pretty much a Death Knight's only defense against Gryphons and the like. Whirlwind and Death and Decay are dynamite for taking out large groups of enemies, and taking out villages (Whirlwind is great on air units!). Just don't send your guys in it! Unholy Armor would be better except it last for a short time and the castee has a life reduction. If you must, cast it on an Orge close the enemy to get rid of a couple of his guys, but I prefer Goblin Sappers or Catapults for a job like that. On another note don't cast this spell on Sappers; they'll blow up.
With Mages, never use Fireball, it's too weak for the magic power it consumes. As with Death Knights, keep them behind everyone so they won't get damaged. Blizzard is an excellent spell to use on villages (again, have your guys steer clear!), and Polymorph is for that really powerful one guy you want gone. Casting Flame Shield is either a nice way to get rid of Peons (cast it on one of them and see!) or if you want to send a Knight in for a charge. Invisibility is awesome, especially when used on Transports! On land, use them on Ballistas and Knights so you can do some damage. Never cast Invisibility on a Demo Squad. Combining the two previous spells can give devastating results.
If you cast Invisibility and Flame Shield on Knight, and have him move into the village, to can wipe out most guy without them knowing it. Note that you must "move" into the enemies you want to destroy. By "attacking" or clicking the right mouse button to move, the Knight will attack, and give away his cover. Instead, press "M" and point to where the Knight will move. This also works well on sea units.
I never use the the Eye of Killrogg and Holy Vision spells. Flying Machines and Zeppelins are better. If you play with Fog of War on, they may be more useful, but otherwise forget them.
