Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness Hints

Tips on creating levels

  • Well, be creative.  Put in units to capture, change stats, and do whatever you think will make it different.  It really helps in making a level more interesting.

You really can't adjust AI.  It almost seems to be random.  For instance, one computer player will, when starting from scratch, build a Barracks, Blacksmith, and Lumber Mill, and that's it.  Maybe make a few Ballistas in the process, but never upgrades to a Keep.  Then, the computer player next to it will upgrade extremely quickly, then bash your town in with Knights before you can even build an Ogre Mound!  The only real thing I can suggest is play, and see who is the toughest.  Then, put a small area of trees around where they start (so they won't get out and attack you till later), put their gold mine far away from their Town Hall, or simply give them the minimum money to start a town.

Having the computer start a town is a whole other thing.  Sometimes, even when you give enough money to build a Town Hall, the computer will start chopping wood, get some, and then stop, confused, and not do anything.  For this reason, start them off with a Town Hall and a bunch of Peons.  They may have a head start, but it gets them going.

As mentioned above, sometimes the enemy just refuses to build a town.  To check, use the reveal map cheat (check the cheat section, I'm not giving it away here!) to see if they build.  Sometimes they won't start right away, so give them time.  If you wait more than 10 minutes, they probably won't build one, so go back and revise.

A word of advice ... if you put the computer guys on "Air Attack" don't start them off with much money and a big town.  If you do that, and you start off with just a Peasant, before you've even upgraded to a Keep, they'll be sending hordes of Dragons to fry everything to a crisp.

Don't start the enemy with tons of guys.  Put in alot if you give yourself alot of guys (or make a super NPC, read in the area about "neat things to try) but otherwise let the computer make it's own.  If you play the level, and find it too easy, THEN put in more guys yourself.

You may want to avoid the "Town Buidling" so give yourself and other players all available structures, so you can make all units right away.  It makes things alot quicker.

I personally found it best to start off a player with 2 Peasants, a couple Footmen to defend, and a farm or two.  Then, you can build a Town Hall wherever you want, not where you designate it.  Put in a lot of gold mines too, and many clearings.

If you want to start with just a Peasant, remember to give enough money to build one!  And on the subject, change the amount of oil and gold in oil patches and gold mines.  Some people forget this, and you end up having more limited resources than you want!
