Editing statistics
If you've ever played the first Warcraft, you may remember the unit editor that they included with a patch for the game. Well, although there is not currently one to edit the stats in built-in levels, you can change around some things to your bidding.
One thing I like to do is to make each side's units a little different. For instance, take that Humans are smarter than Orcs, but the Orcs are stronger. For a Grunts, we'll make his Basic Damage go up a point or two. On the other hand, with the Human, make it cheaper to "build" him, and reduce "construction" time. (Notice how these games always refer to these characters as if they were buildings or somethings? Weird, huh?) For Trolls, give them a more powerful axe, but the Archers can have a longer range. Another thing: make Dragons have more Armor, but Gryphon Riders are more powerful. Also, if you want to control Daemons, but want them to be more powerful than the wusses they are, give them more power! Play around with stats editor, and see what you can think of.
The Warcraft 2 manual really doesn't say anything about the map editor, and the on-line help is only marginally helpful. Now, if you've played the game, most of the stat editing things should be understood: like HP, Range, Build Time, etc. You can also check the Help file for some a little help. But there are a few other things:
- What's the difference between Armor and HP, you say? As an example, if a unit had no armor, and was hit by a Troll axe, he'd lose 15 HP. It he had 4 Armor, he'd lose about 8. That's just an example, but the more armor a unit has, the less damage it'll take.
- What's Magic Points mean? I truly don't know. Only Death Knights have this option to 1, but changing it to 1 on other guys doesn't seem to effect them.
- What about "Basic Damage" and "Piercing Damage"? Well, I bet you didn't know this, is that each time a unit is hit by a weapon, the computer performs a bunch of mathematic calculations to figure out how much damage is done. Now then, Basic Damage is kinda like the max damage that can be done...how much can be done depends on the Armor of who your attacking. The Piercing Damage refers to the amount of life you can take out of your opponent regardless of Armor rating. Just how much damage is random, but the number they specify is the max Piercing Damage...it can be as little as half. That may all be confusing, and you really don't need to understand all that. Just increase the numbers, experiment, and see how much damage you want units to inflict.
- And just what is the difference between "Peasant" and "Attack Peasant"? I don't know that, either. See, Blizzard should've done a bit better explanation of these things!
