Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness Hints
Mission 7: Grim Batol
Mission Objectives:
- Destroy 5 Oil Refineries
This seams to be the level that stumps players the most, simply because they don't know what they are capable of doing. You start off with 4 Knights, 3 Peasants, 5 Footmen and 4 Archers. You do not have a town built yet, so make sure you keep those peasants alive. Take about 6 Knights and Footmen south. You are on a mud bank surrounded by water and rocks, so there's only one way you can go. Kill the guards that you meet until you come to a red catapult surrounded by walls. Ignore this for right now, and continue south. You will meet up against a Guard Tower and a few more Grunts and Axethrowers. Explore around the enclosure to make sure you have killed everyone. Now comes the part that many gamers didn't know they could do: break down the walls surrounding the 3 Catapults, and move a unit next to each of them. You will here a trumpet type sound, and the catapults will be yours to command. You have basically "captured" these catapults. If you're good, you should have made it this far without a single fatality.
Load all of your fighters (not the peasants) onto the Transports, and shuttle everyone across the river. You may need to make two trips. Once everyone is on the east mud bank, set up a defensive position (see the "defense" section of this file) with Knights and Footmen in the front, Archers behind them, and the 3 Catapults in the back. You may want to save the game here. Send one Knight, preferably the one with the most health, north to the base. There are 2 Grunts and one Ogre right outside of the wall. Use your Knight to lure the Grunts to your defensive line, where they will be decimated. Send another Knight to get the attention of the Ogre, who will chase you into his death.
Now that there are no more outside guards, use your Catapults and attack one of the Cannon Towers. Once a tower is gone, a few Axethrowers will use the hole to try and attack you, so be prepared. Slowly move north, destroying any Towers or guards that you find. There is an enemy catapult to the north a bit, but there is a wall between you and it. Charge it with a Knight, but have the Knight just run back and forth close to the wall, while you have 2 of your catapults come up from the south and kill it. Use the walls to your advantage. Use your catapults to take out all of the guards, because they will not attack the wall, and they will not walk around it. That should be all of the guards. Break down the wall, and destroy all of the buildings that you find. You can now use the Transports to send your peasants over. Once everyone is off of the western land, destroy your 2 Transports, because they are using up valuable food. Build a town hall as close to the mine as you can.
Now you can begin your normal building processes. Make more Peasants, of course. The object not will be for you will to build up a strong navy. Also upgrade to the max in the foundry. Build a transport, and send your 3 catapults to the small island on the west side of the map, just west of your base. Use these catapults to destroy the oil platform, and any Troll Destroyers that are in range. When your ships are fully upgraded, send at least 4 Destroyers and 1 Battleship south towards enemy base. Hopefully you have scouted around with a flying machine by now. Send your navy south and kill any defenders that you find. When the enemy ships are gone, target the refineries. There are 5 refineries that you must destroy in order to beat the mission. Your Destroyers could be in enemy Cannon Tower range when they attack certain refineries, so watch carfully and destroyed, you've won!
