The Witcher Hints
Upgrading Weapons
1 of 4: Both your Steel and Silver Swords can be upgrade throughout the game by blacksmiths, or by finding/buying better unique weapons throughout the world.
2 of 4: The Silver Sword is upgraded with runes, while the Steel Sword is upgraded with meteorites. There are three of each type -- one that adds damage, one that adds various effects, and one that adds lots of both. The ones that add both are quite rare, and you're unlikely to find 3 before Chapter 5.
3 of 4: In general, making the forging a new sword with 3 of any one type of ore/rune is the best idea. The +damage ones are definitely the best, though if you manage to put together 3 yellow meteorites/sun runes then that would likely be the best. By the time you do that you'll likely have better swords than you can forge though.
4 of 4: Finally, there are a number of unique weapons throughout the game.
