The Witcher Hints

Character Development

  • 1 of 7: In The Witcher, you cannot create your own character as such, but there are a huge amount of skills and possible combinations thereof that you can use to make yourself unique.
  • 2 of 7: For the Bronze Talents you do not need to be terribly picky. You will get enough throughout the course of the game where you really don't need them anymore. It's advisable to start by putting most of your points into the Steel Sword combat styles and to quickly get the Intelligence upgrades that give the ability to gather herbs, and brew oils. The Monster Lore intelligence skill is also rather useful if you take it very quickly, as it will save you money on books.
  • 3 of 7: Once you start getting Silver Talents, you will need to specialize a bit more. You will get plenty of these as well, but not quite so many as to make your choices unimportant. You will probably want to choose whether you want to focus more on Signs (magic) or combat styles. If you focus on Signs, give Intelligence and Endurance skills the priority, while Strength and Dexterity are more important for combat-focused characters.
  • 4 of 7: If you are focusing more on signs, you should still probably specialize somewhat in two or three of them. The most useful ones, in my opinion, are Aard, Igni, and Quen. At high levels Aard makes almost all battles against humans trivial, while Igni can deal out some serious damage at higher levels. Quen is also quite useful, as it cuts the damage you take greatly, and deals damage to nearby opponents as well.
  • 5 of 7: If focusing on combat styles, try to spread your points out as much as possible. The sub-skills that give greater damage are always the most important to get. It's also probably best to prioritize Fast and Strong styles over Group, as there aren't a huge amount of opportunities where you'll be swarmed by enough enemies to make Group useful. It's still worth getting eventually, though. You'll also probably want to choose one Sign to get that will help you in combat. I find Igni to be the best, though Aard can, as mentioned, eventually make all combat pretty trivial.
  • 6 of 7: You may have also noticed some special sub-skills from the 1st level of each of the basic stats that say they require a mutagen to gain. Don't worry about these, as you can get them via powerful potions you brew later in the game. The only really useful one is the Dexterity ability Predator, but none of them are really all that great, so don't worry too much about getting them.
  • 7 of 7: The nice thing about the system is that you can't really mess up your character -- you will simply have a different style of fighting based on what skills you choose.
