Stun or avoid the merchant.
1 of 3: The merchant is the guy with the torch you can see wandering around to the north of where you drop down.
2 of 3: Wait until he's moving away from you with his back turned, then start moving toward him.
3 of 3: After he goes off to the left, follow him and wait for him to stop, then move up to him and right-click to knock him out. (You could've waited until he moved on and just sneaked by him, but knocking him out lets you loot him.)
