Tips on Selecting Race

  • Each race in Wizardry 8 has its own natural abilities and weaknesses, making them naturally inclined toward certain professions. Additionally, some races possess special traits. Choosing a race for your character is largely based on that race's starting attributes (see the chart on page 8 of the manual) -- in general, you want to choose a race that will give you a large pool of bonus points to distribute at character creation. However, there are a couple of other things to consider:

    Other attributes: While one race may give you more bonus points to distribute, it may also be deficient in certain important attributes. Say for instance you are creating a Ranger. Creating him as a Mook will give you the largest pool of bonus points, but the Mook's Speed is very low. Creating a Hobbit Ranger instead means you lose 10 bonus points, but gain 15 points of Speed.

    Dracon Breath: The Dracon race has the ability to breathe acid on opponents. This can be very useful in the early part of the game, before your party has access to decent spells.

    Magic regeneration: Faeries regenerate spell points at a faster rate than any other race, making them ideal for spellcasting classes. Conversely, Lizardmen regenerate mana more slowly.

    Item restrictions: Faeries are unable to equip most heavy weapons and armor. A faerie Fighter is thus a bad idea. Additionally, you may find several items in Wizardry 8 which are usable only by certain races. Creating a character to take advantage of those items can make your party more powerful later on.

    Resistances: All races have a few inherent resistances to certain attacks. Usually, this isn't much of a consideration when choosing a race for your character, but it's good to bear in mind. For instance, Dwarves possess natural damage resistance, as does the Monk class. By creating a Dwarven Monk, you multiply the damage resistance.

    Generally, I create magic users as Faeries, to take advantage of the increased spell point regeneration and the naturally low AC (which makes up for their armor restrictions), unless I plan to have them use weapons often. I use Hobbits for thieving classes such as Bard or Rogue. I tend to avoid Lizardmen except for Fighters or Ninja.
