Mystery Case Files: Dire Grove Hints

End Credits Puzzle

  • 1 of 13: When you've finished the game, let the credits roll on without clicking the "Main Menu" button. At the very end, a strange decoration will frame the screen -- words separated by symbols all the way around. Hmm?
  • 2 of 13: Let's look at some of those words. At the top left, it says "PresidentsAddress * sqrt(9) + YardsInMile " and so on.
  • 3 of 13: That almost looks like a formula. (In case you haven't seen it before, * means multiply.) What if we were to translate each phrase into a number, then do the math indicated by the symbol?
  • 4 of 13: The president's address is 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, so let's make the first number 1,600. The square root of 9 is 3, and there are 1,760 yards in a mile. So that would be --
  • 5 of 13: -- 1,600 times 3 plus 1,760. See the pattern here?
  • 6 of 13: The best way to do this is to discover the number for each phrase first, then do the math. Some of them will require a little internet research, but none of them are too obscure; I found all the answers in Wikipedia, even the one about the Pacman ghosts.
  • 7 of 13: But in case you don't have access, here are the numbers you need:
  • 8 of 13: Okay. Now that you have all the numbers, all you have to do is pull out your calculator and do the math. The final formula is --
  • 9 of 13: 1,600 * 3 + 1,760 + 1,977 - 4 + 2,795 * 333 - 187 + 1,492 * 8 - 605 + 23 - 206 / 14  --  which gives us a final result of --
  • 10 of 13: -- 2,156,246. Are you asking, "So what?" Notice the number of digits here.
  • 11 of 13: This is the same number of digits as a phone number (in the U.S.). Take out the commas and insert a dash, and you get --
  • 12 of 13: -- 215-6246. If you get the phone in the secret room working and dial this number, what will happen?
  • 13 of 13: In fact, what you get is a rather confusing one-sided conversation with a man with a very bad French accent. The rumor is that he's a character from an upcoming Mystery Case Files game. Stay tuned!
