Dracula 3: The Path of the Dragon Hints

Solving the Painting Order As a Logic Problem

  • To start with, let's set up our logic puzzle elimination table. We'll make the columns be the wall slots where paintings can hang, numbering them 1 to 4 in left-to-right order. Slot 1 will be the one above the head of the bed, slot 2 will be the one above the side of the bed, slot 3 will be the one above the spot where you found the missing painting, and slot 4 will be the one above the dresser that started out empty. If we call the paintings "Patroclus," "Sebastian," "Gymnosophist," and "M&M," then our elimination table will start out looking like this:

       1               2               3               4
    Patroclus       Patroclus       Patroclus       Patroclus
    Sebastian       Sebastian       Sebastian       Sebastian
    Gymnosophist    Gymnosophist    Gymnosophist    Gymnosophist
    M&M             M&M             M&M             M&M

Let's start the elimination rounds by trying the Patroclus painting in all of the slots. Doing that will reveal that it has a "light-wall border" in slots 1 and 2, so neither of those can be its original slot. Therefore, we mark out (or rather, erase) the word "Patroclus" from columns 1 and 2 in our elimination table, giving:

       1               2               3               4
                                   Patroclus       Patroclus
    Sebastian       Sebastian       Sebastian       Sebastian
    Gymnosophist    Gymnosophist    Gymnosophist    Gymnosophist
    M&M             M&M             M&M             M&M

Next, do the Sebastian painting. You'll find that slot 1 is the only one that's clearly not right for it.

       1               2               3               4
                                   Patroclus       Patroclus
                   Sebastian       Sebastian       Sebastian
    Gymnosophist    Gymnosophist    Gymnosophist    Gymnosophist
    M&M             M&M             M&M             M&M

Third, check the Gymnosophist painting to find that it must be the biggest painting of the bunch, since there are no slots that give it a "light-wall border." We can't update the table for it, so go ahead and do the Martha and Maria (M&M) painting to find that it can't go in slots 1, 2, or 3. Updating the table for it, we get:

       1               2               3               4
                                   Patroclus       Patroclus
                   Sebastian       Sebastian       Sebastian
    Gymnosophist    Gymnosophist    Gymnosophist    Gymnosophist
                                                   M&M

Looking the table over, we can see that the Martha and Maria painting must go in slot 4. That means none of the other paintings go in that slot, so update the table to show that.

       1               2               3               4
                                   Patroclus
                   Sebastian       Sebastian
    Gymnosophist    Gymnosophist    Gymnosophist
                                                   M&M

Examining the updated table, it's clear that the Gymnosophist painting is the only one that can go in slot 1, so eliminate it from columns 2 and 3.

       1               2               3               4
                                   Patroclus
                   Sebastian       Sebastian
    Gymnosophist
                                                   M&M

Finally, we see that the Sebastian painting has to go in slot 2. That means it can't go in slot 3, and needs to be eliminated from column 3, which will give us our answer.

       1               2               3               4
                                   Patroclus
                   Sebastian
    Gymnosophist
                                                   M&M
