Landmark Notes
1 of 3: In several areas of the game, you'll find "landmark" items that will be of interest to your dog.
2 of 3: If he's in your party, take control of him and right-click on a landmark's hotspot to "mark" it.
3 of 3: This will give your dog a buff during all combats in that area.
