Dragon Age: Origins Hints
How can I get Owen to cooperate?
1 of 6: Right-click on the smithy door to start a conversation with Owen.
2 of 6: Try to persuade or intimidate him into letting you into his shop.
3 of 6: If that fails, right-click on the door again and try picking or breaking the locks.
4 of 6: Once inside, get him to cooperate by promising to rescue his daughter from the castle. (This starts the "Lost in the Castle" quest.)
5 of 6: TIP: To get some extra gear, right-click on the crate in the SE corner of the shop to move it aside, then try to open the hidden trapdoor. Owen will unlock it for you, and you can open it to get the gear.
6 of 6: ALTERNATIVE: You could say "forget it" to Owen, then choose to kill him. If you do, get the key from his body and loot the above-mentioned hidden trapdoor to find a bundle of equipment you can give Murdock. When you return to the smithy after the village is saved, you'll find a generic blacksmith working there. The only reason to do this is if you really want to buy Far Song, which is the best longbow in the game. (It's darned expensive, though, at 120 gold and 90 silver.)
