1 of 3: Besides giving you a codex entry, it can be sold to a merchant for a few silver.
2 of 3: Also, you can trade it to the hermit in the East Brecilian Forest area for one of three items that he has.
3 of 3: It's best to not mess with the song book's chest at all for now. You can come back and get it later on if it turns out that you need it to barter with the hermit (though you shouldn't, since he'll take several other items in trade).
