Dreamfall: The Longest Journey Hints

How do I open the gate with four sets of symbols on it?

  • 1 of 13: First, if you haven't found that gate, you may need to explore the lair a bit more.  The following hints should help you.
  • 2 of 13: If you've done everything in the previous set of hints, you should be able to reach both "halves" of the lair, and you should also be able to find all four of the statues with wheels on their torsos.  (If not, go back and read the question linked above.)
  • 3 of 13: And you probably found a secret door between two sections of the lair.  Just past that secret door is where the gate I'm talking about is located.
  • 4 of 13: The symbols on the gate are grouped into four ovals -- with two symbols on each oval.  And those symbols on the gate should look very familiar.
  • 5 of 13: The top half of each pair matches one of the four symbols on the floor in the large room near the entrance to the lair.
  • 6 of 13: And if you look at any of the four statues with a wheel on their torsos, the symbols on the wheel are the same ones that appear in the bottom half of each pair.
  • 7 of 13: That must mean that you can open this gate by setting all four statues correctly, reading the pairs of symbols.
  • 8 of 13: Use the top symbol in the pair to tell which statue, and the bottom symbol to tell how to set that statue.  For example, the left-most oval on the gate has what looks like a triangle above a slanted lowercase "h" on its top half, and an hourglass-like shape on its bottom.  (If anything looks like it's a mirror image of what you've seen before, ignore the fact that it looks like it's reversed.  Close, even mirrored, is good enough here.)
  • 9 of 13: If you go back to the room with the symbols on the floor, you should walk toward the altar room where you first entered this area -- the "triangle-h" symbol will be on the floor as you head that way.  Keep going until you reach the statue, and then click on it until the hourglass shape is on top.  (There is a notch on the top of the wheel to indicate which symbol is selected.)
  • 10 of 13: Repeat for the other three sets of symbols, and the gate will be unlocked when you return.
  • 11 of 13: If you're having trouble matching all of the symbols, this map of the lair may help you get your bearings:
  • 12 of 13: I numbered each of the four statues on the map, and going by those numbers, here is the full solution:

1 (near the entrance) -- set to the hourglass
2 (near the crumbling wall) -- set to the diamond
3 (near the secret door) -- set to the rectangle
4 (on the far side of the lair) -- set to a V shape
  • 13 of 13: The symbols on the wheels can unfortunately be a little hard to make out, but you still should be able to get a good enough idea of what the symbols are to solve the puzzle.  Once you've set all the symbols correctly, you can go back to the gate, which you should now find is open.  If it isn't, check all the statues again and make sure you've set each one correctly.
