Echo: Secrets of the Lost Cavern Hints

How can Arok make a spearthrower?

  • 1 of 24: Read the documentary database entry on spearthrowers.  To do this, right click to open the inventory, then click on the shell on the left.  If you've solved the puzzle with the fresco, the spearthrower entry should already be open.  But in case you need to open it yourself, click on "Technology, Tools, and Techniques", then click on "The Art of Hunting," then select Spearthrower from the list.
  • 2 of 24: It looks like a decent spearthrower could be crafted from a branch (or stick), and a deer antler.
  • 3 of 24: Take them back into the cave, and look for a "combining rock".
  • 4 of 24: There is one at the back of the cave -- with several useful tools already in place.  To find it, walk to the back of the cave -- two steps in (with your back to the entrance of the cave), when you walk on the path to the right.
  • 5 of 24: Put the deer antler on the rock.
  • 6 of 24: Now let's see if we can get the pieces into a shape that will make a viable spearthrower.
  • 7 of 24: To find out a little about each of the three tools, hold the cursor over each one.
  • 8 of 24: There is a scraper (on the left), a knapped flint (in the middle), and an awl (on the right).
  • 9 of 24: Refer to the picture in the database for ideas on how the antler should be shaped.
  • 10 of 24: The deer antler is rather cumbersome; perhaps it could be trimmed down a bit.
  • 11 of 24: The knapped flint can be used to remove large chunks of the antler.
  • 12 of 24: It will need to be used in three places.
  • 13 of 24: Use this tool at the top-left tip of the antler to remove the curved tip of the left spike.
  • 14 of 24: Use the tool again to remove the center spike of the antler.
  • 15 of 24: Use the tool a third time to remove the small spike at the right end of the antler.
  • 16 of 24: Use the awl (the tool on the right) on the antler to make holes in it.
  • 17 of 24: One hole needs to be on the point of the antler on the far right.
  • 18 of 24: A second hole should be on the left end of the antler, near the base of the left spike.
  • 19 of 24: The center of the antler is still too thick.
  • 20 of 24: Use the scraper to remove a strip from the middle of the antler.
  • 21 of 24: That's it for the tools on the rock, but the spearthrower still is not complete.
  • 22 of 24: Remember how the spearthrower in the fresco was put together?
  • 23 of 24: You will need to add something (similar to the slingshot used in the fresco) to the antler before it is complete.
  • 24 of 24: Use a small strap on the hole (at the right tip of the antler), and get a completed spearthrower.
