Fable: The Lost Chapters Hints

Spell Tips

  • The most important spell tip is to have lots and lots of will potions down on a slot on the item quickbar so you can just quickly press the potions' quick key when you need more magic power. Also, find and drink some Will Master's Elixirs as soon as you can (see the Elixirs of Life and Will spoiler list) and buy level-ups in Magic Power in order to increase your magic line.

There are lots of cool and useful spells in this game, but the ones I discuss below were more than enough to get me through the game easily, so spend your will XP on them if you're not sure what you want.

My very favorite spell is Physical Shield, since it can be cast to protect you during any combat. When you're hit, your magic points are drained instead of your health. The more level-ups you buy in Physical Shield, the fewer the magic points taken away for each hit. Be sure to have lots of will potions on the quickbar, since your Physical Shield will shut down when you run out of magic points. Physical Shield is extremely useful in getting up combat multipliers (see Experience and Combat Multipliers), and in completing a quest with the "without a scratch" boast. It also protects you from knockdown and keeps your flourish attacks from being interrupted halfway to completion.

The Slow Time spell is also extremely useful, especially in battles with lots of fairly tough monsters. It's also great for boss fights where the boss monster can easily block most of your attacks -- with Slow Time, you can attack him and build up to a flourish much more quickly, plus you can run around behind him and attack from there.

Enflame is great because it'll both damage and knock back every enemy that's near you. It's ideal to use when surrounded by powerful foes, especially if you've gotten all four level-ups in it. Hot stuff! (Note that you can even use it when you're escorting someone, since they won't be hurt by the flames.)

Lightning, the basic beginner spell, is fairly powerful once you've bought all the level-ups in it, and can be useful against single powerful creatures, including some boss monsters. This is because the spell practically immobilizes its target as long as you cast it continuously, keeping you from coming under attack. (Just don't forget to keep an eye on your magic points.)

Multi Arrow is a great spell even for players who don't rely solely on archery all the time. Cast it and then fire four arrows at a single large and powerful creature to do it lots of damage. Buy all four level-ups in this spell as soon as you can (after mastering Physical Shield and Slow Time, that is).

Heal Life is a spell that isn't often useful except when you're using a henchman or are on a quest where you have to protect someone in order to succeed. Get the basic Heal Life +1 spell as soon as you can, but don't waste XP upgrading it until you have lots of XP to spare later in the game.
