Making Money
One way to make money is to exploit the "hero save" feature when you're on a quest that you can find a lot of money on (see Saving and Loading Games for more info on that).
Another way is to buy products from a vendor who sells them cheaply and then sell them to another vendor who will pay more for them than you paid. This involves a lot of traveling around and checking to see what markup each vendor is using so you'll know who's best to buy from and who's best to sell to.
A much better way if you have a decent guile skill is to buy all a merchant has of a quantity item (like potions or produce) that he has a good amount of and then sell them back. You have to have enough gold to buy *all* he has in stock at once instead of a few at a time, since he sells things cheaper when he has a lot in stock. Once he has none of a quantity item in stock, he'll pay a lot to get some, so sell him all you have of that item at one time. Then rebuy it all, resell it all, etc. until you have enough money for whatever it is you're saving up for.
When doing the above, it helps to already have a large stock of the item(s) you're going to do this with. Also, when you're done for awhile, buy back all the stuff you'll want to barter later on, since the merchant often gets in new shipments, which you can then add to all you've got. You can get started on this with the trader near the exit gates of Bowerstone South as soon as you graduate from your guild training. (TIP: Buy all the health and will potions from the guild shop to add to what the Bowerstone South guy has.)
Many towns such as Bowerstone South and Oakvale have unoccupied homes that you can buy. (And they have occupied homes and shops you can buy if you're evil enough to kill off all the current residents.) To buy an available home, interact with the sign that's outside of it. You can then choose to rent it out, and another sign will pop up that you can use to buy various levels of improvement for the home. You can also make it more valuable by mounting trophies on the empty plaques that appear on the wall after improvements are done. To collect rent money, come back to the sign every now and then and get the money sacks on the ground next to it. (You can always switch to having it be a marital home for you, and you can always sell it for the exact amount of money you put into it.)
