Fallout: New Vegas Hints
Rescue the NCR hostages from the Techatticup mine.
of 11: Move on down the road to its end, then look around for a narrow path guarded by two Legion soldiers that leads to the mine's entry door.
of 11: Inside the mine, move down the tunnel to reach the first room, then take its north exit to reach the room with the two prison cells that the NCR hostages are in.
of 11: If your Lockpick skill is 50+, you can lockpick the cells' gates open. The nearby Legion guards notice this, but won't turn hostile yet.
of 11: Go up to a hostage and activate him to get the option to untie him. If any Legion guards see you do that, they'll all turn hostile to you.
of 11: If you're sneaky enough, you can release a hostage without the guards noticing, and they won't turn hostile to you. Instead, they'll attack the fleeing hostage and try to kill him.
of 11: The hostages will usually run for the mine exit instead of fighting the soldiers, but they may not make it. Quicksave right before sneakily freeing a hostage, then follow him all the way to the mine exit to make sure he gets out alive.
of 11: If you give up on getting both hostages out alive that way, you'll have to eliminate the Legion soldiers. The best way to do that is to use the Stealing Tips to kill them off one at a time with mines or one-shot-kill sneak attacks to avoid turning the rest hostile or gaining Legion infamy.
of 11: Another thing you could try is dropping a powerful weapon and one unit of ammo for it (if it's not a melee weapon) next to a hostage before untying him. He'll probably pick up the weapon and ammo and start using it on the soldiers. That will mean that he'll be fighting instead of fleeing, so unless you give him a really powerful weapon, he's still likely to get killed.
of 11: It is possible to jump into and out of both prison cells without unlocking their gates. If you use that method to get in and untie the hostages, the Legion soldiers won't be able to get to them, but they'll still be able to escape. (Note that after untying the first hostage, you should exit the mine, quicksave and quickrestore, then reenter the mine before untying the second hostage in order to avoid one of the Legion soldiers turning hostile to you.)
of 11: If none of that works for you, set some mines to lead the soldiers across, then start off by hitting one soldier in the head with a sneak-attack critical.
