Fallout: New Vegas Hints
Fighting at the Thorn
of 9: Enter the Thorn (location 48 on the Zone 1 Map), then go down the stairs on the south side of the main room to find Red Lucy standing on a platform near the fighting pit.
of 9: Talk to her about the Thorn and how the fights work until you get the options to bet on a fight, participate in a fight, and set up a mixed fight.
of 9: The custom fights just cost you money and don't give any reward, though they can be amusing to watch. Betting on fights can get you some caps, but not very quickly. (WARNING: While a fight is going on, don't shoot at anything in the fighting pit or drop down there.)
of 9: The really good option is to fight in the pit yourself. After you choose your opponent type and quantity from a list, you'll be taken to your fighting cage.
of 9: Approach your cage's door to get it to open, then go up to the gate. When it opens, be ready to go out into the pit and start fighting. Your opponents will enter the pit from the opposite cage.
of 9: This is a fight to the death, so make sure you don't get killed. Killing your opponents will get you the usual amount of combat XP and loot.
of 9: After the fight is over, go over to your cage's door and wait for it to reopen. Past it, go up the ladder to return to the main Thorn area. (WARNING: If you leave through the creature cage and shoot down the creatures in the cages past the ladder for XP, you could ruin the whole fight setup.)
of 9: Talk to Red Lucy to get some caps. The tougher your opponents were, and the more of them you fought, the more caps you'll get -- up to 500 caps for three deathclaws.
of 9: If you have plenty of mines and/or ammo for your favorite weapons (or use unarmed or melee weapons), you can build up a lot of caps and XP this way. Lower-level characters may find this to be a good way to go up a couple of levels before taking on some tougher quests.
