Fallout 2 Hints
Get a car part.
of 9: Talk to Smitty in the junkyard on the west side of town to get this task.
of 9: Smitty will be willing to sell you a car for $2000, if you can find the fuel cell controller for him. (Note that there is a similarly named part that you will be able to find elsewhere, which can also be installed in the car, but not as a replacement for the controller.)
of 9: There aren't too many working cars on the roads in the future Northern California.
of 9: Most of them seem to end up in junkyards.
of 9: Maybe the part that you need will also be in a junkyard.
of 9: There's one in the Gecko junkyard (north of the main Gecko settlement). Talk to Skeeter there, and see if he has the part you need.
of 9: He will give you the fuel cell controller, but only if you can give him a super tool kit in exchange.
of 9: Just deliver the tool kit and pay him his money, and you'll be able to drive away in your new car.
of 9: In case you didn't read the section in the readme file that came with the game, you will need to recharge the car with Micro Energy Cells (I also found that Small Energy cells worked), with the "Use Inventory Item On" command. Make sure to use this command on the front of the car, and not the trunk -- the car and the trunk are treated as two different items.
