Fallout 2 Hints
Where do I get the Hy-Mag part to repair the reactor?
1 of 7: Think of who's been willing to help you.
2 of 7: Senator McClure wants to fix the reactor.
3 of 7: You can get his permission to pick up a Hy-Mag unit from the main amenities office. But before you go there, note that this may be your only opportunity to complete another quest.
4 of 7: You will get this one in the Junkyard of Gecko.
5 of 7: Talk to Gordon, and he will suggest an alliance between Vault City and the town of Gecko. He will give you a disk of economic data to take to Senator McClure.
6 of 7: You can deliver this disk to him, to convince him to give up the part. Or you can just ask him directly, and he'll offer his assistance eventually. But once you've repaired the reactor, note that there's no way to deliver the disk any more (or at least wasn't in my version).
7 of 7: In spite of these efforts, I found that proposing the alliance to McClure had no effect on the game either way, if I optimized the reactor. That is, the proposed alliance never happened. Not if I delievered the disk. And not if I just asked for the Hy-Mag directly. I suspect this is a bug, since I couldn't find any possible way to further the alliance, nor was I able to find anyone else to do so. (My guess is that talking to McClure about the alliance *should* make it happen, but I can't be sure of this.)
