Lockpick
Lockpick lets you get into places where you don't belong -- such as through locked doors and into locked chests.
There are only a few places where you need to get into a locked item, or where getting into one is at least an alternative solution to a major puzzles. In most (if not all) of these cases, you can keep trying to lockpick over and over again until you succeed. While a critical failure is possible, if you eventually build up a skill somewhere in the 40-60% range by the end of the game -- as in, what you'd get by adding a point or two per level -- you probably won't jam many locks. For those few "critical" locks that you can't pick, a well-placed explosive charge will generally remove the lock.
The main use of this skill -- at least beyond minimal levels -- is probably for thief-like characters, who want to go picking locks simply to steal things. In this case, a higher skill, in combination with a good Sneak skill will reduce your chances of getting caught. This might get you some more money or better items than you could buy at the same point in the game, but it won't help you solve many major puzzles.
