Fallout 3 Game Add-Ons (DLC) Hints
Kill Desmond OR kill the Professor.
1 of 6: NOTE: There's a confusing mess of little objectives that you might get at this point, but I'm going to put all of the quest-finishing hints into this one.
2 of 6: Talk to the brain if you want to, then decide who to start blasting with your gatling laser (or whatever weapon you prefer).
3 of 6: Since you've sided with Desmond this far, it's best to keep going that way. Besides, if you kill Desmond now, the brain will just try to have you killed, forcing you to kill it, too. (Of course, that's perfectly okay if you'd rather go that way.)
4 of 6: When you start shooting the brain tank, most of the nearby protectrons will turn hostile to Desmond (and probably to you, too). Just keep shooting the brain tank until it breaks, at which time all of the robots in the lab will deactivate.
5 of 6: Talk to Desmond to finish the quest and get your vault reward key, then kill him to get his unique eyeglasses if you want to.
