Shortcut Exit Tip
1 of 5: At the top of the EXIT stairs, you'll find an exit to the Capitol Building East Entrance area.
2 of 5: NOTE: Those doors will be unopenable until after the necessary repairs are done to get the metro car going.
3 of 5: You'll end up in a spot not far from an exit to the Seward Square area.
4 of 5: Once out there, you can fast-travel back to Megaton or wherever (after any nearby hostiles have been dealt with) for resting and resupplying. You can also go for three unique items now if you got the "Sorry, My Darling" holotape.
5 of 5: When you're ready to resume this quest, return to the Capitol Building and go back to the Presidential Metro area that way. That's a lot shorter than getting there the way you did the first time.
